Russ Wheeler, born Russell Munn on April 24, 1933, hailed from the picturesque town of Priceville, New Brunswick, Canada. His journey into the world of music and entertainment began in the early 1950s when he started singing and captivating fans with his talent. However, fate had other plans for Russ.
In 1952, he answered the call to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force, embarking on a tour of duty that took him across Canada, the Yukon Territory, the United States, and various countries overseas. After completing his service, Russ decided to settle in Fredericton, the capital city of New Brunswick, where he resumed his musical pursuits.
The Echo Valley Boys and Musical Success
In Toronto, Ontario, Russ formed his own band called The Echo Valley Boys. Their popularity soared as they performed at top venues in the area. Russ even hosted his own radio show over CJRH in Richmond Hill, just north of Toronto. The group’s appearances on CKVR-TV in Barrie, Ontario further solidified their status.
In 1958, Russ signed a three-year contract with Rodeo International Records in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His album titled “Tragic Romances” featured traditional favorites that had resonated with audiences for years. Notably, the album included the poignant track “The Death of Johnny Horton”, along with the heartfelt tune “A Sinner’s Sweetheart,” which Russ himself penned. The album gained traction not only in Canada but also in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
The Multifaceted Russ Wheeler
Beyond his musical endeavors, Russ had another intriguing side to his on-stage persona. He developed a character known as “Squeeler McCoy”, a corn-fed country hick comedian who kept audiences doubled up with laughter.
